TASK Lighting (Part 3 or 3)

Hi!

Hope everyone is well.  We’re on a final discussion (Part 3 of 3) about lighting.  We’ve previously discussed Ambient/General and Task Lighting.  Today, let’s discuss ACCENT Lighting.

Accent Lighting adds drama to a room by creating visual interest.  As part of an interior design scheme, it is used to draw the eye to  paintings, sculpture, houseplants and other prized possessions/collections.  It can also be used to highlight the texture of a brick or stone wall, window treatments or outdoor landscaping.

To be effective, accent lighting requires at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighting surrounding it (drama).

Accent lighting is usually provided by recessed and track lighting or wall-mounted picture lights.  Below are a few really good examples of ACCENT Lighting.

LIGHTING – Part 2 of 3

Good Afternoon and Happy Monday!

This is Part 2 of 3 regarding Lighting.  We discussed Ambient/General Lighting last week and today we’re going to talk about TASK Lighting.

Task Lighting helps you perform specific tasks, such as reading, grooming, preparing and cooking food, doing homework, etc.  It can be provided by recessed and track lighting, pendant lighting and under cabinet lighting, as well as by portable floor and desk lamps.  It should also be free of distracting glare and shadows, and be bright enough to prevent eye strain.  Here are some great examples:

Basic Types of Lighting

Hello and Happy Friday!

Let’s talk lighting today…

There are three basic types of lighting that work together in your home.  They are Ambient, Task and Accent.  Today, we’ll discuss AMBIENT LIGHTING.  Ambient lighting is also known as General Lighting and it provides an area with overall illumination.  It radiates a comfortable level of brightness without glare and allows you to see and walk about safely.  In some spaces such as laundry rooms, the ambient lighting also serves as the primary source of task lighting.

Chandeliers, ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures, recessed or track light are a great way to accomplish this type of lighting inside the home.  You can also use lanterns mounted on the outside of the home as well.  Having a central source of ambient light in all rooms is fundamental to a good lighting plan.

lightingNext week we will talk about Task Lighting.  Until then, have a great weekend!

2015’s New White

Hello and Happy Wednesday!

It’s a new year and as the saying goes… Out with the old and in with the new! Instead of those plain white walls, try Guildford Green by Benjamin Moore. It’s a great color that can be used in either a traditional or contemporary setting. Think Spa/Zen or even Library and with a pop of color (berry, teal or chartreuse) for a teens room. Consider it the new 2015 White!

Happy New Year !

Hello,

I hope your new year is off to a great start!  May what you see in the mirror delight you and what others see in you delight them!  And speaking of mirrors…

In Feng Shui, the power of mirrors are believed to symbolically double your wealth, health and happiness.  It is also relieved that anything your mirror reflects it will double or duplicate.  The million dollar question is… What does my mirror reflect?

To have good feng shui mirror placement there are 10 things your mirror should never reflect.  Here are those items:

  • Doors and Windows
  • Bed
  • Toilet Seat
  • Flames in the kitchen
  • Another Mirror
  • Clutter
  • Dirty drains or other unpleasant views
  • Sharp corners of furnitures or walls
  • Distorted or unclear images
  • Body of the tallest member can’t see his full image

Hope this helps when hanging your new mirror!

See you next week–

Kim
